The best doughnuts ever and great service even when line is out the door. Since moved to AZ and cannot find a place close to it.

The absolute best. The icing on the maple bars is DIVINITY. My usuals are: Maple bars, chocolate chip cake, cherry cake, or the cream filled ones. This is the best donut shop this side of ... the Universe.

Good stuff here! Plenty of donuts to choose from and their lattes are pretty decent. The staff here is friendly as well. Makes for a good Sunday morning outing, especially if you're in the mood for some pastries 'n coffee or milk, a personal fav of mine. Can't have pastries without coffee or milk, that's just silly =P

Rudy's makes the absolute best donuts! I grew up on Krispy Kreme donuts and we only got them right off the conveyor when they were "HOT NOW" so I thought that all donuts were supposed to be hot to be good. Boy was I wrong. A really good donut, like the ones at Rudy's, doesn't need a gimmick to make it great. It's just great. My favorite is the cream filled chocolate bars but all of their donuts are great.

In these troubled times, it's good to have places that are familiar and reassuring. Places that soothe your soul and offer delicious delights at excellent prices. I grew up in Castro Valley and Rudy's was a mainstay of my childhood. I loved the crullers and old-fashioneds, and my little brother was obsessed with the rainbow sprinkle donuts. The people who worked there were always friendly and easygoing. I just went there today for a nostalgic visit with my mom and got a yummy old-fashioned, no glaze, and a cup of coffee, and loved watching the cluster of older men who gather there in the mornings to chat, possibly after a fishing jaunt. Sure, the paint color's changed since I was a kid (it used to be blue) but not much else has, and I'm just fine with that, Rudy's.

I love Rudys Donuts!! I have been going there since i was little and I wouldnt want to go anywhere else. I have a lot of great memories when i was younger meeting here sometimes with my softball team before we go to a tournament. Very nice enviornment and great donuts!

Marks of a good donut establishment... Sunday morning there is a line 8 people deep. The majority of tables are occupied by old men eatin' donuts and drinkin' black coffee and watchin' the world go by. Cases and cases of donuts. I ordered a maple bar and they custom filled it for me with whatever I wanted. That is first class donut-dining. Plus they have raised crumb donuts, which were awesome. Never seen that any place else. If I live in Castro Valley my whole life I will definitely be one of those old men who post up on Sunday and power through a couple donuts and scoff at the way them dang whipper-snappers wear their jeans.

The quality has been really hit-or-miss here lately. Some days the donuts are kind of spongy and tough, and some days they're a lot better. I always come in around the same time, so are they selling yesterday's donuts sometimes? Also, a few days ago, some woman came in and cut in front of some 10 year old kid and nobody said anything.

  • Knat L.

Not a big fan of the donuts here. I find them a little heavy for my taste. I like old fashioned and when I bit into one, it was like a mouth full of oil. I did like their powdered donut holes though.

Yummmm... cool older place on the blvd. Super nice people, and the best donuts I've ever had. Not too over the top sweet, but they are donuts.. so...yeah. Drop in for a quick breakfast, or if you're in the mood for something sweet and tasty.

so YUM..i remember eating here as a kid. i love their old fashioned cash register. You can see the kitchen from the counter and all the fresh baked goodies coming out. i remember as a kid..if we left our house on time to go to school, my dad would stop for a quick treat. those were my favorite days :D

One of the best doughnuts i've ever had!!!! Always fresh with a large variety, get there early because they go quick! Coffee is great, love the staff most of all, you fell like family when you walk in the door! A true "GEM" of Castro Valley!!!

Bottom line - if you're in CV and you want a donut, go to Rudy's. My kids ask to go here every week. It's an old-school CV establishment, and I love it. A former neighbor of mine (80+ years old) who lived in CV all his life (and still had the remnents of a chicken farm on his property to prove it) swore by Rudy's and told us not to go anywhere else. He knew the owers & said they always bought their eggs fresh from the local farmers which was the secret of the great taste. I do have to mention that we often run into a blueberry or two in our chocolate donuts. I asked about this once & they said the make the blueberry first, and sometimes the batter bowl doesn't get all the blueberries cleaned out of it before they start the batch of chocolate ones. I don't mind personally, but to my blueberry-phobic 6 year old, this is a tragedy of epic proportions, and a waste of a perfectly good chocolate donut. So, don't say you weren't warned. Rudy's Old fashioned are the BEST.

Rudy's is the best reason to live in Castro Valley. But you don't have to live here to visit this independent, family-owned shop and enjoy the very best donut you'll ever taste. Get there early -- they close at 3, and are typically sold out by that time. Favorites: 1) Sugar donut -- raised donut with extra fine sugar -- sheer perfection 2) Chocolate old fashioned -- excellent chocolaty icing, put only on the top half of the nicely balanced crispy/tender old fashioned donut 3) Chocolate raised -- again, icing is only on the top half, and the raised donuts are large, fresh, and substantive without being heavy. 4) Butterfly -- this is like a cinnamon twist -- has a nice dusting of cinnamon sugar on the outside. They also serve ice-cold milk and coffee, as well as machine-made lattes/cappuccinos, etc. I'm not a big Krispy Kreme fan -- they are too sweet, they are overpriced, and they don't have much substance. Rudy's donuts are the exact opposite. Plus, the women who run it (they took over when their dad retired after 50+ years) are so sweet. One of my favorite people loved their chocolate-topped custard-filled donuts, their maple bars, their apple fritters, and their crumb-coated raised donuts. He used to hit Rudy's every morning for his line-up and would cherish each bit throughout the day. But he admitted he really went to Rudy's because he had a secret crush on the gals who work there.

Rudys isnt "JUST" a donut shop, you walk in here feel like you walked into your favorite aunts house who was the best pastry chef in the family. And the 3 wonderful ladies behind the counter are a clone of your aunt, you just wanna hug them and give them a kiss and raid the pastry box for the "fresh-baked" goodies. Always greeted with a smile as big and warm as the sun. Sure it has more of an "older" generation morning "hangout" feel, but so what you came for the donuts....AND THEY ARE ALL DELICIOUS!!! I always get a dozen mixed sometimes i'll mix in half dozen muffins too, like i said, EVERYTHING is delicious. Do yourself the favor, stop in, say hello and grab a dozen!!!

  • Mary Ella D.

Rudy's has been my favorite donut shop for at least ten years... Everything is fresh and tasty, it's so good that unfortunately unless you get there early they will run out of your favorites... Try anything from the krueler, raised, old fashioned, claw, buns, to the croissants, you won't be dissappointed. Rudy's is a classic fixture of Castro Valley.

    (5)
  • Kathryn F.

Again, I think their donuts are just ok. Their buttermilk donut is not good...the raised glazed are pretty good. My kids like to go here when they can. This is the place all the old people hang...it's interesting to list and watch them. Rudy's used to do ham and cheese croissinants and don't anymore, unfortunately...those were pretty good.

Great donut spot. Everything tastes delicious. And I love the little glass bottles of apple juice. They're hard to find. Seems like prices have gone up a little, but I'll still keep going.

  • Laurie S.

Excellent donuts!!! These donuts are definately better than any chain, including Krispy Kreme! They've been around Castro Valley for years and their quality is A+++! The service is always friendly and the location is always clean. Funny, I've seen lots of ACSO hanging out there(and you can tell too), but I've very rarely seen a Chippy. If your in CV and have not tried Rudy's, your missing out!

The blueberry streudel is superb. Light, flaky, sweet enough rather than overpowering, with large granule sugar topping. Yes, there's lots of other varieties and they also are delightful. but that streudel...................Yay! A carton of milk, a napkin or two and off you go with your day set perfectly. Enjoy

Excellent, fresh donuts. Donuts the way they ought to be. Also worth trying: their Apple Turnovers! But, my favorite still: Chocolate French Twist.

My favorite in this area (tri-city, hayward, castro valley), reminds me of king's on the berkeley campus without the high prices. I go way fromNewark onsundays to visit my buddy just to have a reason to grab some Rudy's. They taste like they did in the 80's top quality and huge.

When I think of how to spell donuts I spell it this way R U D Y 'S . I have been going to this donut house since I was a little kid. I love them sp much I don't even like the taste of other donuts. They have this really yummy hawwian hazelnut coffee. its delish with a raised chocolate donut . My favorite bad behavior brekfast on the run.

I walked into Rudy's this morning, not knowing what to expect. For weeks I've driven by and noticed that the parking lot was packed every morning. Could a donut really be THAT good? I had to find out. I opened the door to that old yellow house and walked through the front door. Man, it looks like a VFW meeting up in here. I think that I saw Lee Ermey, Horatio McCallister and Popeye's dad up in here. All the heads swiveled to look at me, and I could swear they all simultaneously had flashbacks to the Korean War and saw some Red Chinese Army soldier saunter across the 38th parallel. As soon as their PTSD induced stares stopped stopping me in my tracks, I checked out the donut counter and ordered a cinnamon roll. I think that the real test of a donut shop is its glazed donut, but I didn't see any there. The cinnamon roll was big. BIG. The donut was good, not exceptional. Props to Rudy's for being the AM home for Castro Valley's old folks.

Old school, classic, local donut house. I ve recently rediscovered this spot. I remember going to this place around 1993. I showed up again last year and it hadn't changed a bit. They have all the basic donuts which are perfect every time. BUT the best are the cream and custard filled. Both are huge and packed which your choice of whipped cream or custard. Awesome! The staff is great and super friendly. I love the daily regulars that hang out in this place. It reminds me that fast food/Starbucks haven't completely taken over the town. Give Rudys a shot and support your local business's.

Always a friendly face behind the counter! :) Love the donuts and the ambiance. It's not open very late. You have to get there early for the good donuts. Really spacious so you can sit down with a friend and have a coffee, donut and a good convo! My mom used to frequent this place at the buttcrack of dawn! It's funny because they'll be open, but it's still pitch black inside except for the display cases. And I love the aroma around 3AM near here. It smells yummy up to 3 blocks away as they are making the mornings donuts.

  • Earlene C.

I love the Chocolate French Donut! It's like a donut shaped croissant covered in chocolate! Flakey, buttery goodness :) The coffee at Rudy's is oook. I'd rather wash the donuts down with a pint of milk!

Yumm, maple bar is deliciousss! Icing is just right! Goooey and has a texture that doesn't run, the "just right" creme! Also, seasonal pumpkin spice is tasty as well! Actually was set on getting the blueberry but they were making their seasonal pumpkin spice so I decided to grab one of those, mmnomnom! My go-to doughnut shop(:

Caught a glimpse of the joint several weeks ago and decided to give it a go this morning after yoga. One of the best donut shops I've ever visited. It's a family owned business that has been going strong for 50+ years. I met one of the owners this morning and she was delightful. I love to support local businesses. Now I know where to go when I want a great donut! The donuts aren't greasy and I love that they have ample room for you to sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee and a sweet treat.

Great, warm customer service. But i honestly didn't like the donuts at all. They tasted hard and stale and I haven't returned. I was really disappointed considering all the great reviews.

Verdict: Lovin this old-timey donut shop! Rudy's is in our neighborhood, and we knew it was only a matter of time before we succumbed to the delicious aroma wafting in front of the store! Now we stop by Rudy's once every other weekend to pick up a delicious old fashioned or french donut. The people that work here are so nice, and it's fun to see the group of senior citizens hanging out with their donuts and coffee. This is a great, local CV place to patronize!

Rudy's is an old-fashioned kind of donut establishment. This isn't just a quaint appraisal of the decor or their cash-only policy... it's crucial to understanding the 'nut. More donut places these days seem to have sweeter, lighter, perhaps "fluffy" kinds of donuts. However, I happened to have grown up on REAL, old-fashioned donuts. Donuts that eat like a pastry and not like a piece of cotton candy. Thanks to Rudy's, we can have the real deal whenever we like. Their donuts are thick and cake-like, with icing that is deeper than just the standard candy crunch of the competitors'. In fact, when you bite into a fresh maple bar, the top layer flakes to expose many millimeters o' still-gooey goodness. It's rich, but not over-sweet. Syrupy, but not sticky. Substantial, but not too heavy. The prices are good, the patrons are local and loyal and if you go in with an attitude to try a bunch of varieties, you'll have a blast finding your favorite.

Well, I walked around the corner and I walked around the block and I walked right into a doughnut shop and I picked up a doughnut out of the grease and I handed the lady my five-cent piece Well, she looked at the nickel and she looked at me, and she said Fine Sir, it is plain to see... there's a hole in the middle and it goes right through sez I, there's a hole in my doughnut too Shave and a haircut, two bits. My local donut shop is just as wonderful and old-timey as the song. Quality doughnuts, strong coffee, a buncha old guys sitting around swappin' tales, kids running around with chocolatey faces, the works. The pumpkin doughnuts were as promised, and it's all I can do not to go to Rudy's every day. Yum.

The Asian lady here is funny. As soon as you walk in and even while you're giving her your order, she acts very stern and almost rushes you. As soon as you pay, she lights up and says "Thank you! Have a great day!!". I bought an assorted amount of 13 donuts for $10.25. Not bad. I only got to eat the sugar donut and it was your typical, old-fashioned donut. I wish it was piping hot but maybe I came too late in the morning, at 8:30 am. The BEAR CLAW was delicious though! Lightly glazed with thinly sliced almonds on top. Makes me wonder why anyone would buy packaged bear claws; they don't even compare! In Castro Valley, this is definitely the place to go for donuts.

Ideal donut spot. Was passing through Castro Valley and needed sugar and caffeine. Happened upon Rudy's. Rudy's daughter greeted us with a smile, served some fresh 'nuts on a tray and poured some mediocre coffee into two foam cups. She then proceeded to explain the history of the joint and referenced historical photos on the wall of her horn-rimmed glassed-clad father making donuts in the 60's. We sat and munched among septagenerians gossipping about the neighborhood and we left satisfied.

I love this place. Been going here since I was like 10 and it's always been good. Coffee isn't great, but then I like mine strong. There blueberry cake donut and the chocolate french are insanely good. In the fall, and I probably shouldn't even be talking about this, but in the fall they have a seasonal pumpkin doughnut. Incredible. You're welcome.

My 50th Review! It's been a while since we've been to Rudy's Donut House, but we have very fond memories of Rudy's, especially our first visit. My wife and I had just started dating when we first went here on a busy Saturday morning. Neither of us had much cash on hand as we assumed that they accepted credit or debit cards. We ordered a few donuts and coffee and the total came out to around $7. I pulled out the last $5 bill in my wallet and my wife-then-girlfriend opened up her coin purse and started counting change. When she realized she hadn't made it yet to the total, but was starting to run out of coins, she turned her coin purse upside down and dumped all of her change on the counter. The cashier smiled as we tried to count out the rest of the bill. I think we ended up being 10 to 20 cents short and deeply embarrassed. We started discussing which donut to put back, but the cashier stopped us and told us it was okay. You can bet that on all of our subsequent visits that we made sure we had plenty of cash with us! Since we're no longer in the area, we haven't gone to Rudy's in years, but we do drive by occassionally. Our experiences there, especially our first, always brings a smile to our faces.

I worked here for 3 years and I will never forget it. Worked with some awesome people and the Gina and Angela are absolutely amazing. The most kind and funny people you will ever be lucky enough to meet. Their donuts are so good and the coffee is good if you get the right thing. This place is so affordable and has such a great atmosphere. Miss it a lot!

  • Ryan R.

Ok I don't give out very many 5 star reviews, and I'll admit that this rating is at least a little bit influenced by nostalgia, but in all my years I still don't feel like I've had donuts that I like better than Rudy's and that says something. I went there again recently and it was as good as its always been. The custard-filled chocolate glazed is filled with their house-made custard and is absolutely delicious. Everything else we got there was great too. The place has a very local feel to it. There were probably 6 old men in there when we arrived and I don't think any of them had left by the time we walked out. They were just sitting there reading the newspaper and talking about local events. Which seems about right for a donut place.

I love this place! My son and I come every Friday. The donuts are all so delicious. I'm so glad my son and I have this tradition to look forward to. The staff is very nice and I lurves their apple fritters! The best ever!

Coming to Rudy's is a family Christmas tradition! Wonderful berry donuts. Very tasty! I promised myself I would only have half - it was hard! Delicious!

Maybe it's because I live on the East Coast where Dunkin Donuts has taken over the donut industry like the black plague in medieval Europe, but THIS is what a donut shop is supposed to be like! Pastries of all shapes and sizes in a glass case, the smell of coffee in the air, those round bottles of Martinelli's apple juice that go PERFECTLY with an apple fritter (more on that later). I used to ride my bike across town when I was a kid with my dad to get Rudy's donuts on a weekend. I was happy to see this tradition continue 15 years later when I was back visiting family, stopped by to pick up donuts for the family on a Saturday, and saw that Rudy's was packed with families enjoying their weekend donut trip. Hopefully they'll return 15 years later. Rudy's Top 5 donuts: 5) Maple Donut 4) Cinnamon Roll 3) Crumb Donut 2) Chocolate Buttermilk bar 1) Apple Fritter Rudy's forever!

This place is definitely another Castro Valley icon, having been around as long as I can remember! Growing up I remember how it was a special treat to come to Rudy's in the morning to get a donut or two! Those memories in mind, I brought my wife here on a Saturday morning after not visiting for years. The place still looked the same and it was probably the same crowd still sitting around chatting after all these years. It seems like people really enjoy coming here to have their morning coffee and donut over conversation. We ordered a glazed donut, a chocolate bar, and a blueberry donut. The glazed and chocolate bar were decent. I liked that they didn't have the filmy Crisco aftertaste that some donuts have but they weren't as soft or fluffy as we like our raised donuts to be. The donuts were big, however! The blueberry cake donut was actually very tasty, that was the favorite one for my wife and I. Hopefully I just came here on an off day for the raised donuts as this is a Castro Valley landmark that I enjoyed so much growing up and I hope it's around for a long time!

Good donut joint and excellent, friendly service. I got a raised glazed, a raspberry filled jelly, and a chocolate covered old fashioned. Both raised were light and airy, though the raspberry could have had more jelly filling (ding, 1 star). The old fashioned was spot on--chocolatey frosting, tender, moist, not too crumbly. The lady behind the counter was friendly and communicated with a smile and a good morning.

Decided to take the kids on a Sunday morning, after hearing good reviews from friends. Very disappointing, @ 9:00 am there wasn't much of a selection. Trying to look over what was left, we had to decide quickly because the line MOVES. So I ordered a sprinkle & glazed for the kids, and then a chocolate old fashioned w/nuts for myself. I couldn't wait to get home to eat this donut, so I pinched a piece off while driving. In disbelief I ate another pinch. It just tasted as if it were yesterday's leftover donut, not to mention DRY! Huge let down, because I really wanted to like this place. Maybe this was an off day, or I should've gotten there way earlier. I unfortunately won't be back to find out.

Their donuts are the best. I had two a glazed & cinnamon roll. They were perfext! They were nice & fluffy and not greasy at all. My mom had ordered 2 dozen for her coworkers & they all complimented on how fresh and good they were. Overall, I would highly recommend coming here for their amazing donuts.

This is a friendly place. We have donut Thursdays are our workplace and we always get our order from Rudy's. All the donuts are great, in particular, the jelly and the blueberry ones are my favorite. The coffee is good as well.

Usually this place is pretty good, but today they kind of fell flat. I ordered 2 chocolate donuts and they tasted stale and didn't have enough frosting. The latte I ordered wash't mixed properly.

  • Suzy D.

Hi. My name is Suzy D., and I am a donut-holic. When it comes to Rudy's I've got a serious issue about not being able to moderate my consumption. They just taste sooo good! Not greasy, not stale, plenty of variety and great service. I love that a couple of the ladies that work here are the same ladies (Rudy's daughters I think?) I've seen since elementary school. And still as sweet as can be! Though Rudy's may not be one of those donut places that is open in the middle of the night, the quality makes up for lack of hours. That being said, it's disappointing (read: healthy for me since I'm an addict) when I come back to CV for holidays and they're closed for an entire holiday weekend. Sad face. But, Rudy's has become famous where ever I've been. These donuts have traveled the world via carry on, and friends request their favorites when they know I'm headed home or when family is planning a visit. As for the actual donuts, gosh, where to begin. They're all good, I promise, but here are the ones not to miss: -Raised crumb (looks kinda nasty, tastes like heaven, if heaven had a hole in the center) -Glazed buttermilk bar -Chocolate old fashioned -Cinnamon roll The cherry on top of this donut sundae is the charm the clientele brings. Early in the morning old guys meet to reminisce and swap old war stories. They look like they are always having a great time, and who wouldn't be with coffee and donuts at their side? Someday, when I'm old and retired, I'll be one of those guys/gals.

The best donut place around today. Classic donut place hours and the few times I've woken up earlier enough, I've always had the best conversations with the other customers and the staff. Everyone is family here. As soon as you open the door, you're a part of the family and you know your morning if off to a good start. I've never had a bad experience here in my whole life. I wish I was a morning place because I would visit here more often.

I yelped this donut shop since I was in the area and wanted to see if the donuts lived up to all the good reviews. I ordered a chocolate bar and a small coffee from the very friendly lady at the counter. The lady asked me if the small 8 ounce coffee was too small and if I preferred the 12 ounce cup instead. Thanks for asking, but sometimes I want a small cup of joe and this hit the spot for me today. The chocolate bar was a little chunky looking and heavily coated with chocolate. The donut had a nice texture, not too soft and not too sweet. The chocolate was chocolatey and not overly sweet. I really enjoyed my donut and wished that I ordered two or three smaller donuts so I can taste the different varieties. I am going to have to come back again and sample more of these donuts! I

Nicest people working here! Plenty of free parking. Good tasting and inexpensive donuts. Plenty of seating and laid back vibe so you can just hang out. They don't have a minimum to use a card which is always nice. There is a Peets a couple blocks away so I have never tried their coffee.

Love this place. My gpa came here all the time. The donuts are so yummy, though the donut holes are really heavy and doughy. those are usually my favorite to grab for breakfast. The coffee is good, same as most donut shops. The My family still comes here frequently, the ladies that work here are very friendly....Though they are way over priced now...$15 is too much for donuts and coffee.

I came by in late in the morning and tried the sugar donut and old fashioned glazed donut. I was surprised at how bad the sugar donut was. It was the texture of a stale piece of white bread instead of the fluffy airy texture you usually find. The old fashioned was much better in comparison, but again the texture was this somewhat unusually soft and crumbly texture. I ended up throwing both donuts away after a couple of bites. I am befuddled as to why people like this place.

As a donut connoisseur I was impressed with these donuts. Came in 3o mins before close. I ordered an old fashioner glazed. Perfect crisp on the outside inside moist. Apple fritter was alright and than bad when I FOUND A HAIR FRIED INTO IT. BLEHHHH.

Hands down the best raised glazed donuts I've ever had. I've been going to Rudy's since I was a kid, but nostalgia hasn't blinded me. I've tried numerous other donut places around Castro Valley, and none holds a candle to Rudy's.

When I ate donuts they were the best! They have been in business for years! I'd definitely rue amend Rudy's to anyone! Easy location, great service and great donut holes! Try them you'll love them!

The donuts here are very good and the prices are fair. I like to sit here and read for a while. It looks like a family run place and the Ladies behind the counter are very friendly. If you are in Castro Valley check it out.

**** 4.5 stars **** I am going to caveat this review by stating that I haven't actually been to Rudy's but I tasted them within the same day they were baked thanks to their loyal customer and good friend of mine, Suzy D, flying them back with her on her most recent West coast visit. While I cannot comment on the alleged charm ( yelp.com/biz/rudys-donut… ) this place offers, I can recount how fabulous the donuts were, even if they were not eaten at the exact optimal freshness. I'm not sure she knew my weakness for donuts, or that simply mentioning them meant I was immediately digging through the refrigerator to find a chilled bottle of chocolate stout to offer as a pair (Flying Fish's excellent version being the one I chose), but as soon as I heard the word donut my mind had trouble focusing on anything else until their sweetness was hitting my lips. You see, some people like cupcakes. Others prefer the traditional cake, or even pie. I happen to like them all, but nothing resonates with me like donuts. Growing up in Charlotte, just a couple cities over from Winston-Salem, where Krispy Kreme was founded, the influence of soft, warm, fresh baked donuts ran rampant as a child. Most of their old bakeries from the 70's have since been shutdown, but I vividly recall the thrill of driving in with my mom and sitting at the counter for a hot donut and glass of milk and reveling in its simplicity and deliciousness. Krispy Kreme has since become somewhat of a joke, but don't be fooled, they were pioneers. The donut industry has been distorted in all sorts of ways since my adolescence, some good, some generically bland. Places like VooDoo ( yelp.com/biz/voodoo-doug… ) in Portland go absolutely over the top to come up with crazy combinations that both work and fail, depending on the audience and intoxication levels. They are the exception to the rule though, as most places go for a tamer version of creativity, offering up a variety of flavors but nothing really outrageous. At the pinnacle are experts like Doughnut Plant ( yelp.com/biz/doughnut-pl… ) in NYC, that not only offer unique flavor options, but an actual perfectly cooked donut as the base. Rudy's lies somewhere here and there and the spaces in between. You won't find many mind-blowing concoctions like VooDoo's infamous (and quickly regulated) NyQuil loaded jelly donut, but you will get classics done flawlessly, with a few other options for those wanting to branch out just a bit. We began with the raised crumb donut, Suzy's favorite, and my initial inspiration for hurrying over to taste them fresh. When something is described as "heaven with a hole" only a crazy man would put off eating it any longer than he has to (aside from Brian B, who may have to make a pit stop at an unmarked store for some unimaginable goods first). It was indeed pretty spectacular, and reminded me a lot of a coffee cake in flavor but much more appealing texturally. From there we moved into the more traditional glazed cake donuts, starting with chocolate, then maple, then sprinkles. I really liked the balance of sweet and richness of the chocolate, and it was an ideal match for the chocolate stout, but the maple was another level of sublime for me, drawing my memory back to the phenomenal maple-bacon-bar at VooDoo. The cake batter for all of these was simply superb, some of the best I've ever enjoyed. A minor tasting detour was done to finish off the last of our SAVOR Flowers beer, a special collaboration giveaway from Dogfish Head and Samuel Adams at least year's epic beer bonanza that I had been holding onto to see if the rose water and floral hop flavors calmed down a bit. They had settled wonderfully, turning this beer into somewhat of a Belgian quad palate wise, but still maintaining the beautiful aromas. It was perfectly suited to go with the cinnamon twist, which receives just the faintest dusting of spice but really is focused on being the best pure fluffy donut of the bunch. From there we finished in grande style, with my favorite sweet treat of the night, the buttermilk bar ( yelp.com/biz_photos/vFQP… ). Resembling a miniature sticky loaf of bread, this thing opens up to reveal multiple layers of flavor, with crispy burnt edges and a moist inner sweet spot. I wanted to eat this til I passed out in Suzy's Lovesac, but I knew if I didn't save some for her roommate Paula I would be facing a Polish wrath that would have made Kociuszko seem paltry. The final verdict? Unquestionably outstanding classic style donuts, an art form that is sadly underutilized and underappreciated. Why not a full 5 stars? I'm saving that last bit until I'm fortunate enough to visit myself, but in the meantime I rounded up because they're that damn good.

They have the best chocolate and glazed old-fashioned. They have the best chocolate and maple bars, filled and unfilled. They have the best devils food cake and cake with sprinkles. They have the best cinnamon rolls. They have the best cinnamon cake donuts. They have the best bear claws. They have the best glazed donuts and twists. Did I leave anything out? Simply, the best. And they are verrrrrry nice people, too! Gawd I love Rudy's donuts!

The service is great, the old folks in there at 6:30 am chillin is awesome, i hope to be one of them someday. The donuts are sooo good and not greasy or too sweet. i live about 50 miles away but anytime i'm passing through i ALWAYS stop for a dozen. come early as they dang near sell out by 8am sometimes! Can't believe it's taken me this long to review, been coming here since 2004.

Best Doughnuts weve found in this area. Hell, even in East Bay Really. Friendly staff of metal moms making some of the best doughnuts around. Maple bars and old fashioned are legit. VERY awesome prices too. If your in the area in the morning you need to stop in and grab something.

The best raised glazed donuts in the area, and possibly best I've ever had! My fave is the maple frosted - it's the perfect balance of maple flavor. No matter what time I get there the donuts always taste fresh, the price is great, and the folks are friendly. Highly recommend!

I literally grew up in CV and have driven by Rudy's.... I can't recall how many times, and this past weekend was the first time I stepped foot in their store. What was I thinking?! While I was here, had the pleasure of listening to the daughter of the owner of Rudy's talk about their history of her dad's donut business. She's super friendly and helpful when telling us which donut is which (flavors and what they had in them). They had a good variety of choices, their donuts were fresh/warm and not super duper sweet, which I appreciated. The store definitely had an older feel to it, but to me, that's what makes it an authentic mom & pop store and gives it a 'warm' feeling. Very cute place with good quality donuts, and I highly recommend them!

Came by for a chocolate bar. Is there a better way to spend a buck. Missed out on custard filled. The place has fresh donuts. The place is nice and comfortable,. A good place to relax and read the paper, especially early in the morning when the donuts are fresh. This is a nice mom and pop store. Service is great.

from the outside the place smells like the donuts would be delicious. seriously, i used to have to walk by every day and the smell of rudys is the best part. however the donuts arent that great i appreciate the mom n pop deal but the donuts just arent that good. safeways deli makes better donuts than rudys.
